About this Service

Grinding the Stump Out for Good

A cut stump is a short-term fix. Left alone it becomes a tripping hazard, attracts termites and carpenter ants, and keeps the old root system alive enough to send up suckers.

Grinding takes the stump and the flare roots down 6 to 12 inches below grade — far enough that you can install sod, lay pavers, or pour concrete without the stump coming back. We run a self-propelled grinder for small yards and a bigger tow-behind for commercial work. Either way, you get a clean hole where a stump used to be.

When to Grind a Stump

If any of these sound familiar, it's probably time for a professional to walk the property.

You just had a tree removed and want the yard usable again
You're planning new sod, pavers, a pool, or a driveway over the area
The stump is starting to sprout suckers or new shoots
Termites, carpenter ants, or other pests are living in the wood
The stump is a tripping hazard near walkways or the lawn
You just bought a property with old stumps you want gone

Frequently Asked

Quick answers to the questions homeowners ask us most often about this service.

How deep do you grind?

Standard is 6–8 inches below grade. If you're pouring concrete or laying pavers, we'll go 10–12 inches and grind more of the flare roots.

Can you get to a stump in the backyard?

If there's a 36-inch gate, yes. If access is tighter we'll use a compact grinder or dismantle a fence section (and put it back) at the quote stage.

Will the grass grow back?

Yes — once the stump is ground out, you can sod, seed, or just let grass fill in naturally over a few months.
